- Kabuki was founded by a woman named Okuni in the early 1600s. She performed a new style of dance-drama in Kyoto, which quickly became popular.
- Women were later banned from performing Kabuki, so young boys played female roles. This created "onnagata", male actors who specialize in playing female roles.
