About Mt Fuji Day Trip from Tokyo

Mt Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain and one of the world's most recognizable natural landmarks. This day trip from Tokyo is designed to offer visitors the chance to experience the landscapes surrounding Mt Fuji, rather than just seeing it from a distance. You’ll view Mt Fuji from two unique angles, cruising across Lake Ashi and riding the Hakone Ropeway cable car. Along the way, the tour includes a few carefully chosen stops, such as a lakeside shrine and a geothermal valley shaped by volcanic activity. Reserve this day trip and experience Mt Fuji from viewpoints most visitors never see.

Amazing views of Mt Fuji

Seeing Mt Fuji from both the lake and the cable car was the highlight of our Tokyo trip. We had already seen Mt Fuji from the Tokyo Tower, but being this close to the mountain felt completely different and much more special. Each viewpoint felt unique, and the scenery kept changing throughout the day. We enjoyed everything, so it was hard to pick just one favorite moment, from the Torii gate and swans to the volcanic valley and mountain views. Everything was well organized, and the transport made the day very easy. I recommend this tour.

Daniel
Perfect day outside Tokyo

This tour showed us sides of Mt Fuji we wouldn’t have found on our own. We traveled as a family with children, and everyone liked the tour. The kids were fascinated by the black eggs in the volcanic area, and everyone loved the pirate ship cruise on Lake Ashi. We were lucky to have a sunny day, so the views of Mt Fuji were clear and beautiful. This was an enjoyable trip. We would recommend it to anyone on their trip to Japan.

DESCRIPTION

Mt Fuji Day Trip from Tokyo

SCENIC HIGHLIGHTS BEYOND TOKYO

Escape the city and explore the Mt Fuji area, where sacred sites, lakes, and volcanic landscapes create some of Japan’s most memorable views. With round-trip transport included, you can relax and focus on the scenery instead of planning routes or tickets. The tour blends culture, nature, and unique landscapes beyond the city.

MT FUJI FROM WATER & ABOVE

Experience Mt Fuji from two unique viewpoints, cruising across Lake Ashi and riding the Hakone Ropeway cable car. Enjoy wide lake views and panoramic scenery from above as the ropeway glides over mountains and volcanic terrain. You will notice how Mt Fuji looks completely different from the water of Lake Ashi and from the air on the Hakone Ropeway. Many visitors say these two views feel like seeing two different mountains. Visit Hakone Shrine and see the iconic red Torii Gate standing in the waters of Lake Ashi. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in the region.

BLACK EGGS AT VOLCANIC VALLEY

Explore Owakudani, an active geothermal valley with rising steam vents and volcanic ground. Here, you can try the local specialty, black eggs, boiled in natural hot springs. The area offers dramatic views, sulfur springs, and a close look at Hakone’s volcanic activity. Owakudani isn’t just something you look at. You smell sulfur in the air, feel heat from the ground, and see steam vents up close, making it one of the most sensory stops near Mt Fuji.

SWANS & CLEAR PONDS

Visit Lake Yamanaka, part of Fuji Five Lakes, at the base of Mt Fuji. The lake is known for its calm shoreline and swans that gather here thanks to the lake’s shallow waters and quiet surroundings. Swans may gather seasonally along the shore, making it a popular photo stop with Mt Fuji in the background. Continue to Oshino Hakkai, a traditional village with clear ponds formed by Mt Fuji’s snowmelt.

PRO TIP

While Tokyo is highly digital, the rural areas around the mountain still rely on physical money. Keep some yen coins on hand for coin lockers, souvenirs, or local street snacks and beverages.

Amazing Mt Fuji insights

A lake with no rivers

Lake Ashi has no major natural rivers flowing into it. It was formed by volcanic activity and is fed mainly by rain and underground water, which keeps the surface unusually calm.

Steam that never stops

Owakudani’s steam vents have been active for thousands of years. The landscape is constantly changing, even though the landscape appears still.

Snowmelt from years ago

The water in Oshino Hakkai doesn’t come directly from today’s snow. It can take years for melted snow from Mt Fuji to filter through volcanic rock before appearing in the ponds.

FUN FACT

According to Shinto mythology, Mount Fuji is guarded by Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of volcanoes and blossoming trees, whose husband once wrongfully accused her of infidelity. To prove her purity, she locked herself in a burning hut as she went into labor, miraculously emerging from the flames completely unharmed with three healthy baby boys. Today, she is enshrined at the base of Mount Fuji at the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, where she is worshipped as the protector who keeps the volcano calm. Because of her legendary trial by fire, people visit this shrine specifically to pray for safe childbirth, healthy families, and protection from fire.
