BEGIN YOUR TOKYO FOOD EXPERIENCE

Meet your English-speaking guide at the α 107 Building to start your Tokyo food tour. Your guide will give a brief introduction to the area, and also outline the night’s plan, including food stops and cultural highlights. You’ll then walk to Golden Gai, famous for its tiny bars and neon lights. Your guide will talk about how the area became a hub for artists and writers in the 1960s. They will also point out some bars that have remained unchanged since the 1970s. Here, you’ll get a real sense of Shinjuku’s nightlife, from neon-lit alleyways to cozy, one-room bars. Next, you’ll explore Omoide Yokocho, built after WWII as a hub for local workers and street food vendors. Along the way, you’ll try local street foods like yakitori and takoyaki.

EAT LIKE A LOCAL

While exploring the streets, you’ll visit four carefully selected eateries. Each eatery offers a unique dining experience. You'll enjoy sashimi sourced from Tokyo's markets, yakitori, takoyaki, and more local favorites. Your guide will also talk about each dish, giving you insight into how it is prepared. For example, they will talk about how yakitori is grilled over charcoal. It’s seasoned with just salt or sauce to highlight the flavor of the meat. You'll also learn that takoyaki is a street snack from Osaka. It is made with batter, octopus, and green onion, cooked in round molds. You will also try tonkatsu, a breaded pork cutlet introduced in the late 19th century and became popular in the early 20th century. Two drinks are included, either soft drinks or alcoholic beverages like Japanese sake. Your guide will share the story behind each dish and explain how the recipes developed and became part of Tokyo’s food culture over the decades. You’ll also learn about the seasonal ingredients and cooking methods.
